BlackBerry's heat problem, not batteries but cause still unknown - Japan sales halted
The Canada-based Research In Motion company announced today that it has ruled out faulty batteries as a possible cause of keyboards heating up during recharging of BlackBerry Bolds sold in Japan last week. More than 30 users have reported their keyboards were heating up during recharging, causing concern with all of the recent reports of battery fires and recalls.
To date, there have not been any reports of fire or damage in the
BlackBerry Bolds sold. In addition, the temperature increase is still
within regulations. However, it is an unexpected side-effect, and RIM
admits it still doesn't know the cause -- though attempts to figure it
out are ongoing.
As a result of the heat concern, Japan's NTT DoCoMo mobile carrier suspended domestic sales today, though about 4,000 units have already been sold. It is unknown how many other users have noticed the heating problem, but have not yet reported it.
