Customers walk down a staircase inside Giorgio Armani’s new flagship store in New York.


New York Life Insurance Co. said Thursday it promoted President and Chief Executive Ted Mathas to the additional role of chairman, effective June 1.



Mathas, who has served as the privately held insurer's president since July 2007 and chief executive since July 2008, takes on the chairman role from Sy Sternberg, who will be retiring from the company's board May 31. Mathas, 41, joined the company in 1995.
