A civilian helicopter with 18 passengers and crew members on board has crashed in the North Sea off the east coast of Scotland, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The Super Puma helicopter crashed about 190 km east of Aberdeen as it was making an approach to an offshore oil installation, a spokeswoman of the Ministry said last night.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

"We can confirm that a major search and rescue operation is currently under way in the North Sea, centres on a position about 120 nautical miles east of Aberdeen," the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said in a statement.
