UAW Concessions Said to Include Pay Freeze, Layoff-Benefit Cut - GM - UAW - lay off

The United Auto Workers union, in deals with General Motors Corp. and other U.S. automakers, tentatively agreed to concessions that may include a pay freeze, cuts in layoff benefits and reductions in so-called skilled-trade positions, people familiar with the talks said.

The agreements announced yesterday with GM, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC must be ratified and are contingent on a separate accord on contributions to a union-run retiree health- care fund, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the details aren’t public.

GM spokesman Tony Sapienza, Ford spokesman Mark Truby, Chrysler spokeswoman Shawn Morgan and UAW spokesman Roger Kerson declined to comment on details.
