Flight 3407 victims honored; parts of plane recovered for analysis
Continental Connection Flight 3407 was nearing Buffalo Niagara International Airport on Thursday night when it bucked wildly out of control, pitching up and down and tilting side to side as it plummeted toward the ground, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
The plane's harrowing final seconds occurred just after pilots began configuring its wings for landing. Investigators have not determined why the nose of the Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 turboprop would suddenly pitch upward.
The two pilots were captured on the plane's cockpit recorder discussing "significant" ice on the wings, but another Continental Connection Q400 landed in Buffalo 27 minutes after the crash without problems, NTSB member Steven Chealander said.
