A passenger plane carrying 48 people crashed while approaching Buffalo airport in New York state, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The crash killed all on board and one person on the ground, the Buffalo News said, citing unconfirmed reports from Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

The Q400 Bombardier aircraft went down about 6 miles (10 kilometers) northeast of the airport at about 10:15 p.m. local time yesterday, FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said.

There were 44 passengers and 4 crew on board Flight 3407, which was flying from Newark, New Jersey. She had no information on the status of those on board.

Light snow was falling as the aircraft approached the airport, CNN said.

The plane was being operated by Colgan Air, a unit of Pinnacle Airlines Corp. for Continental Airlines’ Continental Express commuter carrier.
