Sydney’s Bondi Beach was temporarily closed today after a surfer was attacked by a shark, the first recorded at Australia’s most famous beach in at least 58 years.

The incident late yesterday came about 36 hours after a navy diver lost his hand fighting off a shark in Sydney harbor, raising concerns the number of potential man-eaters in Australian waters is increasing.

The 33-year-old surfer, who hasn’t been identified, received “severe injuries” to his left arm and was pulled from the sea after crying out for help, police said. He is in a serious though stable condition in intensive care at St. Vincent’s Hospital after undergoing “lengthy surgery,” hospital spokesman David Faktor said by telephone today.
