Freed hijacked ship ‘within sight’ of Mombasa - ship - hijack

Ukrainian ship MV Faina was sighted on Thursday approaching Mombasa port and was expected to dock at about 4pm local time.

The ship is carrying arms whose ownership has been disputed. It was released by pirates last week but was slowed down by a bad engine.

Somali pirates hijacked the ship with 33 Russian-made tanks and ammunition in September off the Gulf of Aden. It was released on Thursday after a ransom of Sh252m was paid to the pirates.

A failed engine delayed its journey to Mombasa. Curious locals, the media and Government officials have been waiting at the Kilindini Harbour and the nearby mama Ngina Drive to await the ship’s arrival.
