Fear united Victorian bushfires to threaten towns, water, gas - bushfire - water - gas

AUTHORITIES fear two of Victoria's deadly blazes will unite leaving the mountain towns in between - including Powelltown and Warburton - caught in a pincer movement, as well as threatening Melbourne's water and gas supplies.

The Victorian bushfire disaster has claimed as confirmed 181 lives so far, with fears the toll could rise to 300, and razed towns to the ground.

Despite more favourable weather now, fire chiefs are not certain they can prevent the big Yea/Kinglake fire and the Bunyip fire meeting in rugged hill country east of Melbourne from which the city draws much of its water.

They also believe westerly winds from the Churchill fire will drive smoke and flames towards the state's main gas supply plant at Longford in Gippsland.
