Twins sign Kubel for next two years

The Twins announced Thursday that they had formally signed the designated hitter to a two-year, $7.2 million contract with a $5.25 million club option for 2011. The deal was first reported last week when the two sides agreed to the terms of the contract, but the team had to await the results of a physical before officially announcing it.

Kubel's deal could end up totaling as much as $12.25 million. He is set to make $2.75 million in '09 and $4.1 million in 2010. The 2011 option is worth $5.25 million with a $350,000 buyout. The deal also includes up to $150,000 in performance bonuses.

The contract buys out Kubel's final two years of arbitration and his first year of free agency if the option is picked up.
