Winter storm disrupts high school Regents exams - New York - USA - Society

Yesterday's weather-delayed school openings and a few all-day closures disrupted some midyear high school Regents exams, which will now have to be taken in May or June.

The second part of the six-hour Comprehensive English was scheduled to be given at 1:15 p.m., late enough that most districts on delayed starts were able to administer the exam. However, students taking one of the morning tests - such as French, Spanish, earth science and the competency test in U.S. history - will need to take them in June.

In New York State, all schools administer the same test at the same time on the same day to maintain exam security.

Most of the January state tests are opportunities for retakes for students who failed the first time, said school officials, and involve a small number of test takers.

Upstate, where the snow was the heaviest, many schools closed for the day. Most schools on Long Island, thanks to the quick turn to rain, were on two-hour delays.
