In the spring of 1989, Cole Proctor was a head coach without a defensive coordinator. After being hired at his alma mater, Morehead State, only a few months earlier, he had pored over resumes and tips, but nothing stuck out until he pulled out the number of old friend Buddy Ryan.

He had known Ryan, then the Philadelphia Eagles coach, for a number of years and knew that Ryan's twin sons, Rob and Rex, were trying to move up the coaching food chain. So he gave it a shot to see if Ryan would recommend one of his boys for the job. Rob had already signed on with Tennessee State, but Rex hadn't gotten his big break yet.

"He told me that Rex was a good guy and a good coach," the 62-year old Proctor, now a college scout with the Tennessee Titans, said from his home in South Carolina. "So I told Buddy that he was the one guy, the one father, that I would have called. Because I knew he wouldn't lie to me. If Rex was a dog, I knew he would've told me."
