Thai tourist visa fees waived for all countries in bid to boost tourism
The decision was made yesterday at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, deputy government spokesman Puttipong Punnakan said.
The visa fee waiver will be forwarded to cabinet for approval on Jan 20.
The measure is aimed at boosting the tourism industry which has suffered massive losses due to the one-week closure of Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports by People's Alliance for Democracy demonstrators in December.
The Finance Ministry has been assigned to find the funds to compensate the Foreign Ministry for loss of revenue from the waiver of the visa fees, which is put at about two billion baht.
